An Introduction to Amateur Deep Sky Astrophotography
An Introduction to Amateur Deep Sky Astrophotography
“An Introduction to Amateur Deep Sky Astrophotography” by Brendan Spellman of Galway Astronomy Club at Ballybane Library
Brendan, a Galway native, IT professional, and active member of the Galway Astronomy Club, has long been fascinated by the universe. His interest in astronomy grew when he received a telescope during the early days
of the COVID lockdowns. With a keen interest in photography, capturing the wonders of the night sky was a natural next step. Enchanted by the intersection of science and art, he eagerly awaits clear nights to indulge
his curiosity. When clouds interrupt, he enjoys playing board games with his wife and three young children.
In his presentation, you’ll be introduced to the variou types of astrophotography, with a particular focus on Deep Sky Astrophotography. We’ll explore the essential, recommended, and “nice-to-have” equipment typically
used. You’ll learn what’s required to set up for a night of Deep Sky Astrophotography, as well as the process of capturing images and post-processing them to reveal
stunning cosmic details. Throughout the presentation, you will see numerous example images, giving you a
glimpse of the wonders of the universe visible through astrophotography, right from your own garden.
